Story Concept
Something new...

Visual elements
Something new...
Actors, Puppets, Real Props & Sets, Computer Generated Virtual Props & sets, all with a not-yet-seen look, merge into one homogeneous World:
LazyTown.

......we see a young girl entering another World as we walk into LazyTown with her for the first time, as we saw Dorothy seeing OZ walk out into a world of color for the first time.

TOTAL REALIZATION (Under one roof)

The task of realizing the world of LazyTown requires a new working environment that unifies people and machines into one homogeneous pipeline, Totally Realized under one roof.

The Film and Video industry has spent years to define the ideals of such an environment. Many manufacturers have built a myriad of tools and components toward this goal. Several productions have attempted to reach this goal.

Hypercube was founded in order to bring together the manufactures of future technology with the users of future technology and to facilitate the next generation of film-makers to achieve a single creative working environment that allows all aspects of a production to be Totally Realized at once.

For LazyTown, Hypercube has provided one of the most visually stunning and technologically advanced Virtual Cinematography facilities in the World, Totally Realized under the roof of one studio in Iceland. Hypercube co-founder, Mark Read (LazyTown Executive Producer) utilized carefully selected creative tools and people in this extremely advanced pipeline to create what is currently the fastest full resolution Virtual Cinematography system in the World.

HDTV 24P – a SIGNAL or a FILE ?

When film is exposed, processed and scanned, it becomes an electronic image. The standard for this image can vary whether it is a Video SIGNAL or an Image Worlds of Video and Film have merged into a single environment where Signal and File co-exist together.

The Camera SIGNAL immediately produces finished results in real-time; while the action is happening, which allows the greatest amount of creativity and flexibility on the set.

LazyTown is a tape-less production environment where all images are .DPX files and all sounds are .WAV files maintained in a centralized Storage Area Network (SAN). All MetaData associated with the Image and Sound assets is retained in a relational database that associates the Image and Sound assets with its appropriate MetaData throughout the entire production process.

The Core of the pipeline is based around the SIGNAL being HDTV 24P 1920x1080 in the 4:4:4 R:G:B 10-bit color-space with MetaData imbedded into the RP-188 & RP-232 ancillary-data-space and DATA being represented as DPX files with Metadata imbedded into the DPX ancillary data-space.

The implementation is unique yet basic, considering the fact that this is a new way of managing production assets. In the future, as new needs present themselves, this technique will be expanded to encompass areas not yet foreseen.

The COLOR of LazyTown

Aesthetically speaking, minor variations in color and luminance have the greatest emotional impact on a picture; more than the greatest special effects, the power of an image can be created or destroyed with only the slightest variation in color grading. One of the most amazing things about LazyTown the uniquely graded "look" of its COLOR. For many years, Television has attempted to gain the other World look of Movie, but without success and that the Hypercube production environment allows LazyTown to be the first Television show to achieve this much sought-after aesthetic.
